Between 1500 and 1700 a handful of painters reset what a picture could do. Leonardo da Vinci dissolved hard outline into atmosphere. Michelangelo turned the human body into a vehicle for spiritual argument. A century later, Caravaggio dragged that body into a tavern, lit it with a single shaft of light, and made every gospel scene feel like a crime in progress. Rembrandt looked at his own face for forty years and taught Europe how self-portraiture could become autobiography. Vermeer painted silence — kitchen rooms in Delft so still you can hear the morning.

Each of these artists worked inside dense networks of patrons, guilds, workshops, and rivals. Their paintings carry the fingerprints of those networks: the colours their patrons could afford, the saints their cities preferred, the political dangers they had to dance around.
