Executed in Oil on wood, measuring 37 1/2 x 30 1/4 in. (95.3 x 76.8 cm), the surface rewards close looking. Jan Massys builds the composition through layered glazes and a tightly controlled palette, letting cool shadows recede so that the warm, lit passages step forward.
