Created in 1557 during the Renaissance period, this work belongs firmly within the daily life tradition. Pieter Bruegel the Elder worked at a moment when the rivalry between Catholic Baroque drama and Protestant restraint reshaped what a painting could mean. Executed in Engraving, measuring plate: 9 5/16 x 11 15/16 in. (23.7 x 30.3 cm) sheet: 10 1/4 x 13 3/16 in. (26.1 x 33.5 cm), the surface rewards close looking. Pieter Bruegel the Elder builds the composition through layered glazes and a tightly controlled palette, letting cool shadows recede so that the warm, lit passages step forward. The brushwork shifts from the precise to the almost dissolved — a hallmark of mature Baroque practice.
